Earth Girl Arjuna Unreleased Songs

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

The Earth Girl Arjuna OST 1 probably has the most Gabriela Robin material found on any Yoko Kanno album. But sadly, not all songs played in the animation was published. I guess there was a surplus of so many songs… The unofficial fan-ripped album created by roxfan of YKDB contains 47 background music tracks in total, and a couple of notable Gabriela-sounding songs in it.

“Clouds” isn’t the official title, we just need to call it something.

Goliath made fan-transcribed lyrics to “Clouds”. Now aren’t you wondering why those weren’t placed in the OST? Wolf’s Rain and Ghost in the Shell: SAC unreleased songs will be next :)

Origa’s Live Performance of Turn-A Gundam’s Moon

Friday, April 20th, 2007

So. I made this crappy slideshow of Origa singing “Moon” + “Tsuki no Mayu/Moon’s Cocoon” live from the Turn-A Gundam concert. I made it in order to clarify some fans’ perception that Origa sang the original “Moon”, when Gabriela did so. The first part of the performance is “Moon” written and originally performed by Gabriela Robin. The second part “Tsuki no Mayu” is written by Lin Iogi, originally performed by Aki Okui.

Here is a sample of the original “Moon” by Gabriela Robin:

Photos in the slideshow taken from Origa’s official site, The YK Project, and Google image search, edited with a bit of Photoshop.

Oh, by the way, someone has uploaded the real live video in YouTube: (more…)

Ghost in the Shell: Stamina Rose and Zero Signal

Friday, March 30th, 2007

About four years ago, Yoko Kanno was announced to become the composer for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, a semi-alternate world for the highly successful Ghost in the Shell movie. The fanbase was surprised. The Ghost in the Shell movie has been one of the most influential animations that came out of Japan, and the composer for that animation was Kenji Kawai, not Yoko Kanno.

But the fans were also confident that she could come up with something fitting for the animation. Kanno has been well known to shift styles to fit whatever genre is needed for a show, be it comedy, action, drama or suspense. And as the Ghost in the Shell TV series has a lighter mood than the movie, the music also has to follow suit. These following song samples from the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are most reminiscent of the song “The Making of a Cyborg”, which was the theme of the Ghost in the Shell movie. Both have vocals and lyrics by Gabriela Robin. Check them out:

Zero Signal is the third track from the Ghost in the Shell: SAC Solid State Society OST starting off with strong a cappella vocals by Gabriela and ends in heavy electronic instrumentals. The next sample is Stamina Rose which is the third track from the first album of Ghost in the Shell: SAC’s first OST. It’s a chant with electronic pulses and an off-beat rhythm.
