Macross F OST 2 Debuts in Oricon Daily Album Rankings at #1
OMG OMG OMG!!! I feel so happy (what a funny thing to say since I’m not part of the production eh but whatever!)!

This is more than double the first day sales for OST 1, which sold about 10,000 in the first day! I think the first day sales of OST 2, that’s 24932 copies, is a safe distance from the sales of the #2 spot occupied by Mariya Takeuchi selling 11924 copies. It’s also a good position since there are 6 debuts, and the other debut landed at #3. So, while I think I’m counting chickens before they hatch, I can’t help feeling happy about the turnout. Finally Kanno gets a big one

lol…that’s exciting. It’s a good soundtrack to begin with and two of my most favourite songs are on it. So that’s cool indeed.

@Omo, better than Bebop? Are you sure :)?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:36 am
@Kai - aha, good one!
Let’s not forget Bebop, that one had one obsessive-compulsive director when it came to music, they just nailed it! There’s Tank! in the OP, then Green Bird, then Blue to name a few. Very memorable scenes, they just stick in your head, both music and animation

@all - get a view of the Macross F displays in Akihabara in this website:

This one is especially surprising, just look at the shelves to the left:

Although I love many of the songs in Mac F as a whole package it just doesn’t match Bebop for me. @Mai, the Ballad of the Fallen Angel episode is still one of my favourites in anime. Mai (Yamane)’s Rain leading into the Woo style fight in the church and ending in Green Bird is hard to beat in my book. And I still get man tears, even now, when I watch the Blue scene and credits. As Kanno efforts go, Bebop is a 10, Mac F would probably be an 8.
As for the Akiba displays, interest in the show will be pretty high right now so they would be crazy not to push the album. Hopefully the demand will result in ost3.

Mai you forgot something when looking at Oricon charts…. you have to multiply the sales by 1.75.
So for this current week album sales are…
ALBUMS
x->1 - Macross Frontier - 24,932 (x1.7) = 42,384
1->2 - Takeuchi Mariya - 9,917 + 11,924 (x1.7) = 37,130
x->3 - melody. - 5,111 (x1.7) = 8,689
Also Trickster falls fast…
*3 *5 *5 *5 *7 *7↓14 水樹奈々 「Trickster」
25 19 21 21 23 18/15 May’n/中島愛 「ライオン」
And OST 1 gets a nice boost
– — 46 49 — –↑29 菅野よう子 「マクロスF(フロンティア)O.S.T.1 娘フロ。」

@Westlo - I don’t put the multiplier since it’s not an accurate number either, just an estimate. It’s a variable multiplier that sort of “guesses” the real sales figures since Oricon only tallies the big-name record stores selling the CDs within Japan. For anime CDs, the multiplier is generally thought of as higher than local Japanese artist CDs since many foreigners import anime CDs. But that is where it breaks down - how much do you multiply to get the accurate amount of imports, etc?
So taking the multipliers aside, Oricon raw tallies are what I base my posts on, since it’s the base measure they use to rank the CDs. Good to have an estimate of what the real figures are using multipliers though, so thanks

I’ll do a daily tally in this comment.
–edit–
I just realized that I was tallying Mariya’s sales inaccurately: It’s her second week, therefore her sales on Monday will count along with the rest of the week. Macross F debuted on Tuesday, which means Tuesday onwards will be counted, along with all preorders that were made for it. So my tally before has been inaccurate to some degree. Macross F is still leading, but only by a few CDs, though I doubt that it will win right now against Mariya. First of all, her album is a best-of compilation album containing 4 discs, and while I don’t know if the CD count matters, but the best-of compilation of a popular artist is really quite hard to beat. So there, I rest my case, I still hope OST 2 gets rank 1 in the weeklies.

This is indeed great news.
Thanks to Yoko Kanno, Gabriela Robin, May’n, Megumi Nakajima, and everyone involved with OST #2.
I’ll definitely be purchasing this asap.
