Triangler best theme song??? Nice for MF but it’s certainly not best in my book :p

Good for triangler. That was a bit unexpected. Even more is the train-wreck that is Code Geass R2.

If you scroll down to the “reason for award”, Kazuo Iwasaki, Anime Kobe awards panel member, mentions a few things. First, the music award is based on a public poll, from which the top 5 are taken for judging through the awards panel review. Second, many other Macross F songs including ending songs and insert songs had high rankings in the poll. I think Triangler might not be the best Macross F song, but it does do well to represent the popularity of Macross F’s songs.

View the history of past theme song winners and the voting stats (on a side note, let’s think of percentages and not just the amount of votes. Hare Hare Yukai takes the cake):

I wonder what the stats were for Triangler, and the rest of the Macross F songs.

I haven’t seen Code Geass but how did Eva get up there? Are there still so many masochists that are happy to punish themselves by watching that show. I don’t care if its a new movie, Anno needs to learn that there are some things that you can’t polish.
I also agree that its not the best of the Mac F songs but its nice that a Kanno, Robin and Sakamoto song won. Looking through the previous winners list, there’s no individual Bebop or Esca song. I’m really beginning to doubt the taste of the voters.

  5. mai Says:

    @Kai – Not even Inner Universe :\

People need to let Evangelion go.

  6. Kai Says:

No accounting for taste hey ;)
Yeah, Eva, the only show that makes me feel like I need therapy after watching it. The only good thing about Eva was the toasty frog thumbnail theatre, ever read it?

  7. mai Says:

@Kai – What’s that? Toasty frog…? I haven’t watched every Evangelion out there, just the TV series :P

  8. grunty Says:

This is soooo full of SHIT. EVA movie deserves NOTHING in the music department. The (rerecorded 1995) score is absolutely horrendously used – it’s a cram as much as possible approach (hi 14sec Rei I etc.).

  9. Kai Says:

Its pretty funny and if you ever wondered what the end of the Eva series really meant the thumbnail theatre makes perfect sense. The link: http://www.gamespite.net/toastywiki/index.php/Site/ThumbnailTheatre

  10. grunty Says:

Oh that was a general award for EVA? Then it’s EVEN MORE full of SHIT. :P

  11. Pulseczar Says:

Am I the only one here who’ll defend the Evangelion movie? C’mon guys, Evangelion set all the standards for today’s japanese animation. The fact that the movie updates very little of the original and still managed to achieve commercial success and critical praise attests to how well-made and relevant the series is, even today.

I think it’s the same case as shows like “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”. People dismiss it because of how overhyped it is, then flame it because it didn’t live up to their expectations, even though it’s a good series. Evangelion: 1.0 is an excellent movie, and it deserves the award.

As for “Triangler”, I don’t think there’s any other theme song more memorable than it this past year.

  12. grunty Says:

No, it doesn’t defend the award IMHO. Popular != good.

By choosing to be a fanservice movie (first hour being basically redrawn from the source frames) the movie has horrible HORRIBLE pacing (are we really supposed to believe Shinji and Suzuhara+Aida got BFF from their lackluster screentime?) – I imagine that for newcomers (are there any, really though?) it is just a collection of scenes, rather than a cohesive story. The only good thing in the movie to me was how they executed the Hedgehog Dillema episode (TV#04). That made me think that perhaps if they actually thought out the story for a 100 minutes movie and redone the whole thing without the need of making fanboys go “ooooo TV#05 Shinji x Rei” or “ooooo TV#02 nude scene!”, I would be saying something else here.

The animation is nothing exciting by todays standard in the “redone” parts, while in the new parts it’s just a pretty-flashy-bright-colors-in-dark-environments orgy.

The score… oh the horror – quality of the new music aside (THIS IS THE LAST HORIZON AH OH AH OH), the “cram as much of the old score (and let’s face it… the new recording brought nothing to the table) you can, even if it’s 14 seconds” is not a good approach – more ridiculous fanservice.

No, I just don’t think it’s a good movie at all.

  13. grunty Says:

    defend == deserve. lol.

  14. karasu Says:

you guys point out a damn anime movie that’s actually half decent this year, then.

  15. karasu Says:

that people actually watched, cause, you know, just because you think it’s good doesn’t mean people will go watch it.

  16. darkmax Says:

Evangelion 1.0 was a good movie?….. What have you guys been watching? Akira?!

I thought the many scenes in the series was too overdone. Overly long pauses and a really iriitating Shinji. At times, I swear I could have reached into the box and tear his head from his neck. What an absolutely irritating, irresponsible and indecisive teenager.

But admittedly, the concept of the story is excellent.

The movie just upgraded all the visuals. What’s new?

  17. Aria Says:

um, that’s a bit… unexpected. Yes, it’s good, but not.. the song that I like best from Macross F…

  18. Kirby Says:

I think Evangelion 1.0 was good. Maybe not deserving the award, but still good. And I can’t remember a very good movie in last year, anyway… (if there’s one, please recommend it to me n.n)

And, oh well… the theme song is mainly based on votes, so it’s not weird to see popular anime theme songs there… I’m happy Yoko Kanno won a very deserved prize… I like when a song I like isn’t very popular, anyway n.n”
