Shinichiro Watanabe @ FicZone Convention

Thanks first of all to Israel, one of the editors of koi-nya.net for the news! He informed me that there was an interview of Shinichiro Watanabe from the FicZone convention in Granada Spain last weekend, where he got to ask him a few questions about Kanno.

Question: You have collaborated with Yoko Kanno in animes such as Escaflowne, Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Baby Blue and Sakamichi no Apollon. Do you think that you have a special chemistry between yourselves?

Answer: I think she’s an exceptional composer, a genius. When I need really good music for my projects, I know I have to ask her. However, she didin’t participate in Samurai Champloo because its main musical style didn’t fit her, unlike with Sakamichi no Apollon jazz atmosphere.

Question: About anime music, in Macross Plus we can hear ‘Voices’, one of the most important songs in this franchise. How much weight can a song have in a scene’s direction?

Answer: Yes, it’s a great song, very important to the plot. As long as I know, Kanno wrote it in about five minutes (laughs).

Question: By the way, do you know Gabriela Robin? (laughs)

Answer: Yes, I know her quite well (laughs). It’s not her true name. Everybody knows it, but it’s better not to say it (laughs).

For the rest of the interview in Spanish, and for photos of Mr. Watanabe, head on down to the koi-nya website.

I’m really happy to hear Mr. Watanabe describe Ms. Kanno’s musical gift as “exceptional” and “genius”. I can’t think other artists with the exception of Nobuo Uematsu, Joe Hisaishi, Yuki Kajiura, Masashi Hamuzu and some others who can put out the amount of work she puts out & the quality of her work is always exceptional and fresh, but, even though I listen to those artists I still prefer Ms. Kanno’s music. In my opinion, she’s the greatest artist to have ever lived. Also, I’m somewhat shocked to hear that she wrote “Voices” very quickly but at the same time I’m not :)
