Macross Episode 20: Diamond Crevasse

This version of Diamond Crevasse isn’t named differently from the original, but it sure sounds different. I’m sure everyone noticed that May’n was also singing more emotively in this version (now, factor the fact that the original is already emotional…). Here’s a short sample of the start of the song:

I loved that scene and the song - Diamond Crevasse is my favorite Macross F song, and this was a beautiful rendition. I sort of wish they would’ve kept it a cappella, though… I know that the song functioned as bgm for the following scenes, but still, I’d love to hear Diamond Crevasse a cappella, or maybe with only a piano/guitar accompanying the vocals.
By the way, notice how Sheryl gets all the very intense and emotional songs, and all Ranka has is Aimo (which is not particularly emotional, and the “dark” version is just… blah). I suppose this is mostly for plot and characterization reasons, but I hope Ranka will have at least one really “strong” song (and that Nakajima can finally sing in her normal voice) before the series ends.

They must include this version in ost2. Sheryl’s singing combined with Micheal and Klan’s scene was a real emotional double hit.

The way DC was arranged for this episode is just… epic. there’s no other word to use here. i just can’t decide if this or Yubiwa is my most loved Yoko Kanno song.

I’m not gonna listen to this since I don’t wanna be spoiled (although I think I kinda am now… I can kinda guess what happens xD;;) but GAH need to catch up with this show soon ;_;

The new version pulled on my heart strings, it’s probably the most emotional musical score in all of Macross. When you factor in the events surrounding it you can’t help but have praise for it.

I think it’s more that it’s a capella, and it’s a bit slower than the one you get at the concert at the end of Episode 6… at least to start, although it does pick up a bit at the end. That, and there’s more of a vibrato(?) there when she holds it?
Mind you, it fits the scene… and shows the contrast between her and Ranka - the latter was amazed that the former could sing even when worried sick over Alto and company in Episode 7… but when push came to shove and it was HER turn to do it, she couldn’t. And so Sheryl had to step up to the plate, and sing rather beautifully as well.
Definitely needs to be on Nyan Tra.

@Haesslich - Aside from what you mentioned, I think plucked acoustic guitars with an R&B vibe was added to it, which reminds me of Yubiwa from Escaflowne. May’n is a pop/R&B artist anyway, so it suits her well

You’re talking about the ‘Sayonara, Sayonara’ part towards the end of the clip? Yes, they were added.. and the slower style suits May’n, as witnessed even by her earlier Diamond Crevasse rendition.

@fugue more than “yubiwa”? 0__0 maybe if Sakamoto Maaya hadn’t sung it. Her almost teary sounding voice makes that song amazing. aaaah~~ Shoji Kawamori, Yoko Kanno and Maaya Sakamoto. No wonder Macross Frontier is so good >.< It’s almost like an Escaflowne reunion!

The song + the scene that happened made me cry so hard…. May’n did this song justice indeed. I really felt the emotions in the song… And… yes… The Sayonara got to me…. sniff

The reason I got to like Diamond Crevasse was because of the scene where Sheryl and Ranka sang it in a cappella. And this a cappella version of it is the best! It’s so emotional. I wish they include this on an OST or maybe another single from Sheryl Nome? haha

Loved the part that kicked it right when Elmo spoke, I definitely prefer this version to the original, love the added rnb vibe to it as well as the acoustic guitar.

mm i just saw ep 20
they didn’t edit this version of DC as much.. like the original better.. it’s much more refined and easier on the ear.. mayn sounds emotional, fine, but it’s to the point where she’s trying too hard i think
also the version in ep 6 better.. the words/feel fit that that part of the anime much better than ep 20
my vote would be for diamond crevasse in ep 6 over yubiwa in escaflowne..diamond crevasse is an excellent song, pretty easily the best one in macross frontier imo..
on a unrelated note i get the idea that YK is just really “busy” nowadays.. too many of the songs from MF fall short of the perfection i’ve come to expect of her.. it’s like she’s gotten too busy with too many projects and can’t afford the time to make her songs perfect anymore

Man ep 20…that diamond crevasse version when she was in the shelter was just too good…someone’s gotta find an mp3 for it
