Kanno, Watanabe, Kamiyama for Japan Media Arts Festival Symposium

Yoko Kanno, Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Baby Blue), and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell:SAC) are going to be the guests to a music symposium entitled “How does music change animation? Animation Metamorphoses” at the Shizuoka University of Art and Culture Auditorium on November 3, 2009 2-4pm. Admission is free (!!!). They are going to discuss the workings on directing music, that’s why the three have been selected. I believe it’s a good choice, but they should probably, with all due respect, replace Kenji Kamiyama with Shoji Kawamori, because he has worked more with Kanno.

Interestingly, on October 31, Genius Party, the Bebop movie, and GITS:SAC SSS will be aired at the same location for free, perhaps as a primer to the talk on November 3.

Not fair… me too I want to know how the music changes animation… It’s a really interesting topic. For every “fan” of anime AND music, music in anime is as important as the topic of the anime, the animation, the characters, etc. Sometimes, I’m depressed to hear “bad” music in an anime I like. It ruins everything!…

Most Japanese fans are saying that well, it’s free, but the place is not very accessible, so you’ll have to spend for the travel. If I were there, I’d most likely spend! :D

Kanno and Kenji Kawaii are one of my fav. composers so it would be great to hear what they have to say about this topic “How does music change animation? ” . I hope that somebody will post on the net what they have to say about it…

I’m sure this conference will be be pretty interesting, I would like to be able to go. I also hope we’ll have some feedbacks from this conference :)

Replace Kamiyama? Noo. I’m pretty curious as to what he has to say about the process, actually. His works seem more traditional in regards to that so it may be good contrast with what Shinichiro Watanabe has to say. On the other hand, Kawamori would be an excellent third addition and I agree that without him we probably can’t get the complete picture.

@omo - after I made that post, I actually also thought, why not the three of them? *laughs at self* :P

@Yyrkoon - I don’t think there’s going to be much fan coverage for this event, because it’s a Tuesday, and as the fans are saying, also quite inaccessible. But I think, since it’s not a concert (heh) there’s a bigger chance that reporters could get in and take photos. If no one records this, at least if there’s any news about their future works, then that would be good enough for me.

That’s a shame that this might not get much in the way of fan coverage since the process of music direction is something I’m really interested in. Hitoshi Sakamoto once said that about as much as 50% of the experience derived from video games (he’s a video game composer) comes from the music and I’d like to know whether Kanno and company carry the same sentiments.
