Recommendation Series:
Joanna Newsom

If you have listened to the whole Gabriela Robin discography, you’ve probably heard so many synth alterations made on her voice, but some songs just seem so raw it has to be her real voice. Take for example “ABC Mouse Parade” from Yoko Kanno’s Song to Fly Album - it sounds so raw, almost no synth except for special effects here and there. (…not to mention that Kanno’s voice actually sounds like that when she talks!)

So that given, here is an artist who has almost the same pitch, timbre, and pronounciation as Gabriela Robin in ABC Mouse Parade. Her looks might also remind you of the character “Sora” from Escaflowne the movie. Her name is Joanna Newsom, a harpist, pianist, harpsichordist, singer and songwriter from Nevada City, California.

Listen to her song Sprout and Bean and note the similarities:

Maybe she is Gabriela Robin?

Nah ;)

you’d probably be a very unique if you sing with a harp… not too many harpists out there :D

Nah, her voice is too weathered and old sounding to be Robin’s.

Although that was how Robin sounded in ABC Mouse Parade and when Kanno speaks, the same texture and enunciation comes to mind. Most of Gabriela’s works are obviously synthesized, layered, or altered, especially in Ghost in the Shell: SAC, but ABC Mouse Parade from her solo album just sounds too raw to be manipulated.

Um,may I ask you something? You heard all of her songs?

Whose songs? Robin’s, or Joanna’s? For Robin’s I must say I haven’t heard all, maybe I missed one or two songs. For Joanna, I’ve heard about 3. Probably not enough to judge her style as a whole, but I wasn’t commenting on her whole career :)
