Is this Gabriela?
This email came to my inbox this morning, and I won’t publish the sender’s email and name for privacy purposes:
Hi Mike, saw your site when I was looking up Yoko Kanno on Wikipedia. (Big fan of the music on GITS S.A.C)
I don’t know if this is relevant at all but I met a women when I lived in London who claimed to have sung for the Macross film.
It was at a party at her house near a town called Lewisham, I was invited by a friend so I never actually knew her name but while I was there I noticed a postcard with a message in Japanese but it was signed by Hayao Miyazaki so I was instantly curious and asked her what that was all about, she said it was while she worked out in Japan as a vocalist for anime cartons and films and such. I don’t remember all the names of the things she worked on but being a huge fan of anime, Macross always stuck in my memory so when she told me that we chatted some more but got off the subject so that was that BUT I do remember that she had a young son called Gabriel, which I always thought was a cool name. I’m sorry I don’t remember her name, shame really as she was quite pretty!
Anyway, like I said, I don’t know if its any help but it was a few years ago now and I doubt there was much of a fuss back then over ‘Gabriela’ being real or not so I don’t think I was being fed a line. (Her name may well have been that but I really don’t remember!)Hope that helps in any way

First I find it hard to believe that the singer is from London since Gabriela has an authentic Japanese accent. But, I think this is more of a coincidence than a hoax though. The emailer sounds really friendly

I promise its not a hoax, to be honest I had never heard anything about Gabriela Robin until I looked up Yoko Kanno on Wikipedia earlier this month and read about it and wondered. I really did meet a women who claimed to have worked on the music for Macross. If it wasn’t for the hand written postcard of Tottoro from Hayao Miyazaki, the subject would never have come up.
Her name could have been Gabriela for all I know but like I said I have completely forgotten her name, it has been some time, about ten years since that party. She was English incidentally, I don’t think I mentioned that before and she would have been in her late twenties (I think). That really is all I can say about it. I wish I could tell you more because I’m a little curious now about who I did meet!!

We already know that Kanno is Robin..if you listen to her speaking she has EXACTLY the same voice as the singing voice. Also she’s been credited as Kanno while singing as Robin so…it’s a no brainer really.
Still it’s a cool story, and who knows maybe she did work on it, backing vocals or something.
