Macross F Vocal Collection: Nyan Tama Review
So here we go! I’ll just put comments on the on songs that are new or have changes. The CD title is Nyan Tama, for Nyan Tamashii, translating to Nyan Spirit
DISC 1
1. Triangler / Maaya Sakamoto
2. What ’bout my star? @Formo / Megumi and May’n
3. Aimo / Megumi
4. Diamond Crevasse~Tenbou Kouen nite (trans: In the View Park) / Megumi and May’n – This is the acapella version of Diamond Crevasse sang by Ranka and Sheryl when they first met.
5.Welcome To My FanClub’s Night! / May’n – non-SOS version
6. Iteza Gogo Kuji Don’t Be Late (trans: Sagittarius 9pm Don’t be Late) / May’n – non-SOS version, starts off with Sheryl’s “Atashi no Uta o Kike!”
7. What ’bout my star? / May’n – non- SOS version
8. Infinity #7 / May’n and Megumi – A version of Infinity sang by Sheryl with Ranka. This is still different from the one in the animation where in Sheryl was on stage and Ranka was singing as part of the audience. I like this a bit better than the original as we get better harmonies between the two singers.
9. Choujiku Hanten (trans: Superdimensional Restaurant) Nyan CM Song (Ranka Version) / Megumi – The Nyan Nyan Restaurant CM song sang by Ranka. I wonder if we will ever get the Minmeh version.
10. Seikan Hikou (trans: Interstellar Flight) / Megumi – This version starts off with Megumi’s “Minna, dakishimete, ginga no Hatemade!”
11. Watashi no Kare wa Pilot (trans: My Boyfriend is a Pilot) / Megumi - has part 1 and part 2 in one song.
12. Neko Nikki (trans: Cat Diary) / Megumi
13. Ninjin (trans: Carrot) Loves you yeah! / Megumi
14. Kyoudai Fune (trans: Brother Spaceship) / Tokugawa Ichirou – This is the enka being performed in the Formo mall.
15. SMS Shoutai no Uta ~ Ano Musume wa Alien (trans: SMS Platoon Song ~ That Girl is an Alien)/SMS Platoon
16. Aimo O.C. / Megumi
17. Aimo~Tori no Hito (trans: Aimo~The Bird Man) / Megumi
18. Ai Oboete Imasu ka / Megumi – The full version of the ending song of the Deculture version of episode 1. I was hoping they’d fix the transition between the first refrain and second verse, but looks like they left it that way.
19. Diamond Crevasse / May’n
20. Aimo ~ Koi no Uta (trans: Aimo ~ Song of Love) / Maaya – I have to admit this was a bit disappointing since it was muffled under the special effects. It worked very well for the aura needed within the animation, but as a stand-alone, not so much. This also has Gablish lyrics ![]()
21. Bonus Track: Infinity Karaoke
22. Bonus Track: Ninjin Loves You Yeah! Karaoke
DISC 2
1. Lion / May’n and Megumi
2. Diamond Crevasse 50/50 / Megumi and May’n – Megumi’s voice in this song takes some getting used to, it starts of high and thin, and in contrast to the original, really pales in comparison. This is a good bye song, now it sounds like a kids’ song.
3. Sheryl no Aimo (trans: Sheryl’s Aimo) – A longer version of the eye catch where Sheryl sings the first line of Aimo. This has a slightly altered melody, and has an RnB vibe to it.
4. Yousei (trans: Fairy) / May’n
5. Northern Cross / May’n
6. Brera to ko Ranka no Aimo (trans: Brera and Young Ranka’s Aimo) / Megumi – This is the version of Aimo where Brera plays his harmonica, and a young Ranka sings Aimo (as evident in the title).
7. Anata no Oto (trans: Your Sound) / Megumi
8. Ao no Ether (trans: Blue Ether) / Megumi
9. Ai Oboete Imasu Ka~bless the little queen (trans: Do You Remember Love~bless the little queen) / Megumi
10. Nyan Nyan Service Medley (Toku Mori (trans: Special Serving)) – Megumi and May’n – This is an extended version of the Nyan Nyan Service Medley in OST 2, with better transitions, improved harmonies and additional songs. The order of the songs are:
Lion > Infinity > My Boyfriend is a Pilot > Diamond Crevasse > Seikan Hikou > What ‘bout My Star > Don’t be Late / Triangler > Anata no Oto > Aimo > What ‘bout My Star / Lion / Ai Oboete Imasu Ka
11. Triangler (fight on stage) / Megumi and May’n
12. Haha to Ko Ranka no Aimo (trans: Mother and Young Ranka’s Aimo) / Maaya and Megumi – This is the version of Aimo that we first hear from Maaya, though I sure wish Maaya sang all the way.
13. Bonus Track: Nyan Nyan Service Medley (Toku Mori) Karaoke
14. Bonus Track: Anata no Oto Karaoke

Nyan Tama on display in Akihabara
And for fandom’s sake, we have a token Gabriela Robin *thing* in the CD jacket: Her notes are in English and Japanese, unlike the other notes that are given by lyricists, singers, and Kanno herself. She even refers to Kanno as if she’s another person *cough*:

English liner notes = Awesome. Like, really, incredibly awesome.
I love this even more.

L-love it!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 7:59 am
Yeah, I saw them in the booklet, but the notes still give off a bit of an Engrishy feel. Still, it was nice of them to include the original.

this should be an industry standard
so… i’m still waiting for my CD to arrive. it’ll probably take another week
i’m dying to hear the “special serving” version of Nyan Nyan Service Medley.

The Diamond Crevasse - Tenboukouen Nite version on the OST’s only 44s, alas… basically the whole bit from Episode 2’s last minute or two, minus the dialogue. Otherwise, it’s a nice “Best of Macross Frontier” edition, at least for people who liked the vocals, yet for some reason didn’t like the extra ‘noise’ in the “live” versions on OST 1.
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:47 am
… one thing to note - the Maaya Sakamoto version of “Aimo” was a bit too reprocessed, IMO - there was too much echo and ‘extra’ noise added to really appreciate her vocal work.
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:54 am
… also, another note - the Diamond Crevasse 50/50, while being very Ranka in the first half, doesn’t use Megumi’s voice very well - we KNOW she has more range than this, and it’s very ‘pop-like’, which takes away most of the emotional impact the song should have… again, in my opinion, based on the scenes it was used in. It’s too fast, and too CHEERFUL. Bit of a waste.
December 3rd, 2008 at 9:12 am
… and the last Nyan Nyan Service Melody (extended) is interesting, especially when they’re effectively singing two different songs, and alternating the lead.

Can’t wait to listen to the album…all the waiting makes me edgy. Macross F is the only series this year that has got me getting all their OST releases.
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:30 am
all hail infinity!!!
Thanks for this!!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 11:57 am
Nice to see I’m not the only one disappointed by the extra reverb and reprocessing in the Sakamoto “Aimo”… or how Diamond Crevasse 50/50 was really changed due to the speeding up of the tempo making it more of a ‘pop’ song when it really doesn’t work as one.
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Oh my God extra tracks *_____________* THANK YOU MACROSS F PEOPLE & YOKO KANNO!!! <3
Guess I know what I’ll be singing next once I get my hand on the OST x3
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
And oh wish all of the liner notes have English in them. Oh well. I can’t wait till the CDs get to Malaysia - it’ll probably take a few weeks or even months, but I’ll be patient. :]
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Watashi no Kare wa Pilot song in this CD has both 1st and 2nd Part all in one song like in the Macross Concert Final
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
@Knightwing - thanks for pointing that out, I forgot that the Seikan Hikou single had the short one. The leaks confused me
December 3rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
What does it say in the parenthesis in the booklet on maaya’s song?: Aimo~Koi no uta/坂本真綾(??)
December 3rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm
@Kirby - it says 蘭雪 = Ranshe
December 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm
@mai - Now I know more than yesterday xD… thanks a lot! n.n

Well, now that there’s a Vocal CD I think it’s time to roll out an Instrumental one :Þ
December 3rd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Now I know why does the medley had “special” in its name… 12+ minutes of awesomeness *o*
This CDs went way over my expectations (gonna listen to it like a thousand times~)
December 3rd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
I’m listening to it right now and oh my God I am so in love with this. I don’t think it’s a ripoff at all, I am definitely buying this and OST 2 (which have yet to arrive since it was out of stock the last time I went to the CD store
). I like the changes that they did, but yes I’m rather disappointed with Maaya’s Aimo - wish it wasn’t so processed. However towards the end, when I got more used to it, it sounded rather beautiful. Ah well, I’ll be awaiting Maaya’s Ao no Ether :]
…Looking at the instrumental karaoke songs they gave us, it gave me a feeling that YK or at least some of the Macross F people paid a visit to the karaoke challenge and thought they’d be nice and give us the karaoke version
Since all the songs have been sung at least once haha. Yes, yes, I know it’s just me & my head up in the clouds.
December 3rd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
@Naddie

Someone in the forums pointed out that May’n also gave her own comments about the CD in her official blog. Anyone knows what she’s saying in her blog?
December 5th, 2008 at 8:41 am
@mai - Hahas you know, I don’t know if anyone noticed it, but at the last page of the booklet, with the credits, theres a line right at the end, saying “*we hope you will enjoy singing with omake tracks!!” XD
December 5th, 2008 at 9:42 am

I recently bought this at Play-Asia whilst looking for some Macross collectibles (after watching Macross F). Thank you kindly for writing up the translated titles. Your review is quite comprehensive - especailly with the notes on the bonus tracks.

Glad you liked it

Last week I got my package with Nyan Tama and well I have to say that this album is wonderful. It’s the best thing that I bough in this year. All the songs are great, I listen to them every day and still don’t have enough of them^^
Really Yoko Kanno made another excellent work.
